Continentia
by Loubena Cahaya Kada
“Continentia” explores the intimate conflict between our higher and darker selves. Inspired by the dynamic tension of William-Adolphe Bouguereau’s “Dante et Virgile,” the intertwined pose captures the raw struggle between restraint and impulse. The angel, calm yet unyielding, embodies the strength of self-control and moral discipline. The demon she restrains symbolizes the negative urges within us. Anger, intrusive thoughts, violent impulses, and the chaos of unchecked emotion. Rather than depicting a clear victory, the painting freezes a moment of tension: the weight, effort, and quiet discipline required to keep our inner darkness from breaking free. Through this work, I express the idea that being ‘good’ is not perfection, but the daily act of choosing restraint over outburst, and light over shadow.
